I think someone needs to hear this today. Is it you?
I was reading the story in Matthew about Jesus walking on water in the Voice translation (Matthew 14:22-36). It’s a story we’ve heard or read countless times, so it’s easy to glaze over and miss what God is trying to show us.
Side note: That’s one reason I like to change up the translation I’m reading, because it often helps me see new things in text that I’ve read many times before.
In verse 31, Jesus’ reply caught my attention. “Why did you doubt and dance back and forth between following me and heeding fear?”
Ouch. I’m pretty sure we’re all guilty of that.
Let’s back up one verse. “But when he remembered how strong the wind was, his courage caught in his throat and he began to sink.”
So, my friend, my thought is this: If you feel like you’re sinking or drowning, perhaps it’s because you’re focusing on the storm instead of Jesus. You’re bouncing back and forth between the fear and hope. Between doubt and belief.
It happens to all of us at some point, and when it does, we’re desperate for an outstretched hand to pull us up.
Consider this your hand 🙂
Fix your eyes on Jesus. Whatever you feed, grows, so stop focusing on and feeding your fear and disbelief. Instead, feed your belief by reading the Word and spending time in His presence and with His people.
If you need help, reach out to someone. Whether it’s us, someone in your church, or a counselor, you don’t need to go through life’s trials alone.
