We are Christians who do yoga.
Something we often say in our Christian yoga studio is that it’s not about the yoga. You might be thinking “that’s an interesting phrase for a yoga studio to use.” You’re right, it is.
When you invite God into your practice, everything changes. The focus is no longer on you; it’s on Him. It’s no longer about what you have to offer, but instead what He has to offer. Grace. Mercy. Peace. Healing. Acceptance. FREEDOM!
Doing things your way
When you try to do everything in your own power and strength, you will ALWAYS fall short. You can’t do it on your own. None of us can. When we try, we inevitably fall flat on our faces (like when I attempt a handstand).
Sometimes that’s part of the process. He lets us do things on our own, if for no other reason than to show us that we need Him! Life erodes us little by little until there’s nothing left but the shell of our former self.
When we finally realize we’ve been doing it on our own, He’s right there beside us, waiting for us to ask for His help. And He gladly offers it! Regardless of where you’ve been or what you’ve done.
It’s about Him
The funny thing is that we seem to need constant reminders regardless of how many times we’ve gone through this cycle. Like a car that’s out of alignment, we have a natural pull to the things of this world, to live life from and for ourselves.
So we invite Christ onto our mat, into the broken, shaky, imperfect areas of our hearts. We crank up some worship music, focus on Him and His Word, and worship Him with our Mind, Body, and Spirit.
We ask Him to show us where we’ve been blind to our sin, blind to how we’re still operating in our own strength. We ask Him to heal our hearts and bind our wounds. We ask Him to forgive us, and help us forgive others. We ask Him for more of Him.
We are Christians who do yoga…but it’s not about the yoga. It’s about Him. Keep the focus on Him, and you’ll be amazed at how He meets you on the mat and gives you exactly what you need in that moment. Every, single, time.
